Q: A question please for Neil and Ida Down, as I know they have enjoyed cruising with Azamara. Information from any other readers would be appreciated. In your opinion is the Azamara Journey suitable for a single female traveller? I have cruised 20+ times, mainly as a single passenger with Cunard, Fred Olsen, P&O, Princess and other cruise lines. I'm booked on Celebrity Constellation for May 2009, my first time with Celebrity. I've read that Azamara is 'Country House' style cruising with open dining and I usually prefer the more formal style of cruising with an allocated table for dinner. Does Azamara have large tables in the main restaurant, or are they mainly tables for two? I'd hate to be seated alone, surrounded by loving couples celebrating anniversaries. I loved the QE2, but I've found the QM2 and Queen Victoria a bit impersonal for singles. I've had very enjoyable holidays with F.O. and P&O, but think P&O have lowered their standards of late. I'm independent, sociable, outgoing and enjoy dancing and feel I should try other cruise lines. Any sensible suggestions would be most welcome. Many thanks - Jan

Jan, a great cruise for singles because smaller ships mean more intimate friendlier atmosphere! Suggest you join the connections group and get chatting with your fellow cruisers before you board - then you have a selection of ready made friends! Go to azamaracruises.com >before your cruise >faqs and you need the 3rd link down that says 'connections'. There are some wonderful deals with OBD at the moment too....Happy cruisin'

Hi, thanks for the information, I'd better get booking and connecting! I hope I can find a good deal as I've already splashed out a small fortune for two weeks' single occupancy on Constellation. I know it will be worth it, it always is, just a painful dent in the bank balance when the invoice comes through. Happy cruising - Regards Jan

Don't forget you can get 'connecting' on the Connie too - same logic applies- got to celebritycruises.com >before your cruise >FAQs and the 3rd link down again. You will have to register but the link at the top that says 'boards' will give you all your info.

Hi Jan, yes you are right to query as you are doing. The first thing to remember is that both Azamara ships are smaller ships holding generally less than 700 passengers so less people to chose from. Having said that because of their size they are more personal ships and you tend to get to know a much larger proportion of the people on board and we like that. The dining situation is one which you need not fear as the tables are for fours, sixes and eights in the main although there are other sizes. When you wish to dine you go to the Maitre'd's station at the entrance of the restaurant and you will be asked if you would like to join others and if so how many. We met so many people that way and many of them were singles who joined us and dinner times seem to last longer than on other ships because there was no rush because the next lot were waiting to dine etc. and because the system allows conversation to flow and develop. I am afraid that I cannot say whether single people we well looked after socially in the evenings and going ashore but the fact that we heard nothing to the contrary would indicate that that side was catered for. Whilst there are no formal nights people tended to dress well all the time and at no time did it feel stuffy or elitist. I felt that it was a better version of Celebrity with a lot more nice touches so I would say that if you enjoy Constellation, which incidentally we did, you should enjoy Azamara. We would be very interested in how you feel about that. ... Neil

Hi Neil, thanks for your prompt comments. I too prefer the smaller ships as you do seem to meet a greater number of passengers. On QM2 you could go the whole cruise without seeing the same person twice, although to be honest, that can be a bonus if you don't hit it off! I'm pleased the Maitre 'D seats singles with other diners as I'd hate to be 'Billy no mates' stuck in the corner alone. Although I did meet a lady on a recent cruise who preferred to spend every meal dining alone, each to his own I suppose. I'm used to 'open' dining on other ships, but only for breakfast and lunch. I find it fascinating talking to so many people from every walk of life and background, probably it's one of the reasons why I enjoy cruising so much. I'm not too bothered about being amused in the evenings, so long as there is some music, a few bars to prop up and people to chat to, I'm happy. I'd better start searching on the Azamara site and make a decision. Many thanks for all your help, Regards Jan
