Not a Premium Line

Cruise Line: Azamara Cruises Times cruised before: 6-10
Cruise Ship: Azamara Journey Sailed: September, 2008
Destination: Mediterranean Age: 46-55
First the good stuff:

Warmly greeted on arrival, took hand luggage as cabins were not ready when we boarded. Hand luggage was placed in cabin for us as was unaccompanied baggage.

Great itinerary.

Shore Tours:

Chios. Docked on Sunday and the town in essence closes down. The only things open were cafes and taverns. Limited activities.

Santorini: Beautiful place. Quintessential Greece. Good tours. The girls went on a wine tasting and a climb on the volcano. Had a good time. We took a self guided walking tour. Ended up in some pretty places with beautiful vistas of the caldera.

Cyprus: Good tour options; however, not long enough in port to do the sites justice. Would be better to have been longer in port.

Israel 1: We went to Ziporri Mosaics. Wonderful archeological site. Tour guide was rather ho-hum and was likely drinking during the tour. The smell of alcohol in the front of the bus grew stronger as the day progressed. Funny thing, his English improved as the day went on also. A good number of the participants thought he was drunk.

Israel 2: Went to Masada. Mind numbing. Outstanding tour but again too short. To investigate this site with any amount of scrutiny 3 days required. Amazing. Excellent historical tour with professional, knowledgeable guide.

Egypt 1: Port Said. Long 12 - 13 hour tour. Lots of driving 3.5 hours each way to Giza. Pyramids... wow! Nuf said. Treated like royalty at 5 Star Hotel where we stopped for lunch. We were "piped" and "trumpeted" into the dining room.

Egypt 2: Alexandria to El Alemein. Short but good tour of the War Museum and the national cemeteries of the Commonwealth, Germany and Italy. Moving.

Sorrento: Pompeii. Mind blowing. Exceptional tour guide.

Rome: Many tours to choose from. Took it easy with a bus tour. Saw lots, visited only Vatican City. Passed many sites. Again good guide.

Ship:
Dining room - tasty and well presented. Adheres to dress code without exception.

Specialty Restaurants: Prime C - Great food but a little hurried asked the waiter to slow it down the second time; was great.
Aquilina - Not as good as Prime C but still tasty.

Cafe - Buffet with many choices, including sushi and sashimi. Fresh salads and lots of yummy yummies.

Decorated much like any other Celebrity ship except more compact with fewer entertainment options.

Staff and Crew: Some were very helpful and courteous while others... well that comes later.

Cabin: A small Celebrity ship cabin with some brownie point extras: alarm clock, binos, portable hair dryer, complementary water and small bottle of wine. Celebrity style linen. Closet size was acceptable as were the number of drawers. Small love seat and coffee table that seemed to always be in the way due to the narrowness of the cabin.

Things that need improving.

Note: Many of the following may seem trivial in nature, however; when we were lead to believe this cruise line is Luxury or Premium, it is the little things that make the difference. Azamara does not present itself in reality at all as a luxury or premium cruise! In our opinion and in speaking with others on the cruise, it was sub-standard. We believe that it was a bottom tier Celebrity ship and crew. Many other passengers had mentioned the same thing and there seemed to general dissatisfaction with the ship and crew. If this is an example of premium cruising, we want no further part of it. We will stick to RCL or secondly, Celebrity.

Cabin: Dirty dished left in the cabin from previous occupant.
Bathroom not properly outfitted; missing bath mat, robe missing, towels ratty and frayed on edges and showing signs of many washes - almost threadbare.
Light burned out but replaced next day.
On occasion, room not made up until mid afternoon.
Cabin steward and "Butler" hard to find and don't seem to pay attention to detail. Phony countenance. Never answered calls/pages even during working hours.
Speed dial buttons on phone did not work.
Foul smell in cabin on first day.

Ship General:
Constantly dirty tables around pool area. Glasses and tableware still on tables on outer deck in the morning from the night before. General untidy appearance on deck at all times while cruising - except for the last night and day when a concerted effort was made to make the decks look presentable. (Too bad that this effort was not sustained during the cruise.) An obvious morale problem exists on this ship. Many staff and crew do not seem to take pride in doing a good job. Ship appeared to be constantly in a minor state of disrepair. Broken tables and chairs that were never repaired, unpainted rust spots, ripped furniture etc. Spilled food and drink not cleaned up. Hot and cold drink machines were hit or miss regarding operation. One elevator sounded as though it was going to fall to the bowels of the ship. Enhanced cleaning was almost nonexistent until it was found that many passengers were falling ill to gastrointestinal disease. Even then, the precautions taken were at best cursory and seemed to be done only to sooth passenger fears and make it look as though crew were doing something. Slot machine buttons, handrails and elevator buttons were rarely cleaned and in some cases not at all.

During the at sea day between Rome and Barcelona, the ship stopped for no apparent reason, mid-ocean. No information was disseminated regarding what was going on, and several people were becoming visible anxious. It was not until we were again underway, about an hour or so later, did the Captain announce that an engine had broken down and needed to be repaired before we were able to continue on. An announcement from the bridge while were stopped would have been appropriate to assuage the fears of a good number of people who were on deck and were acutely aware that the ship had stopped. I thought this ship was just out of refit. Hummmm!

Customer Service:
Abysmal! Guest relations staff unhelpful and jump to conclusions and tend to be passenger deaf and inattentive. Two staff behind the counter and neither would raise a hand or acknowledge people standing in wait. They all seemed too busy to address passengers even though it was obvious they were just making people wait. Many just gave you a deer in the headlights look when they were asked questions. Although some of this may be due to language barriers, there was a general sense that they really didn't want to deal with issues. Case in point: Passengers were required to turn in passports at check-in. I asked to see my passport a couple of days later and it almost took an act of parliament or me to see it even though we were told that we could see them at any time. Guest relations staff did not understand that I was going to give it back, he thought I was going to keep it. It was not until Linda spoke with him did I have a chance to look at it. When I went to pick it up at the Tours Desk prior to entering Egypt, I found that they, in the mean time, had lost mine. It took some time for them to find it. (Three people were running around like chickens with their heads cut off looking for it.) Needless to say, I was getting a little antsy. I had made up my mind at that time I was going to keep it regardless.

Linda wanted to book a tour prior to leaving the ship on a tour, and was rudely told that because they were handing out passports she would have to wait to book the tour when she returned that evening - if there was any space available. It must be noted that the passports had been given out by that time and no one was in line behind Linda. She was pissed right off.

The girls had booked a "Spa Day" for Linda and the two of the them as a thank you. This took place within 15 minutes of them boarding the ship. Spa staff had said no problem and booked 1.5 hour treatment for all three on an "at sea" day (23 Sep). The day before the spa (22 Sep), Tammy was told that all three could not be accommodated at the same time and that one person would have to be rescheduled. Not good enough - if the three could not receive the spa together that should have been stated at the time of booking. In any event, the Spa manager was giving both Amanda and Tammy a hard time expecting them to capitulate to her abrupt and rude manner. They were told there would be a 50% cancelation fee even though the manager admitted that it was their fault for the booking problem. (In any event they were outside of the 24 hour cancellation window). At that point Linda stepped in and challenged the managers behaviour and professionalism. As there was a crowd developing, the manager finally agreed that the appointments could be cancelled without penalty. The manager offered no apology nor did she in any way attempt to offer alternative treatments that all 3 could enjoy together. Amanda went to Guest Relations to complain of the managers behaviour. After some time she was able to get her point across to the minimally english speaking staff that they were not happy with the way the manager has treated Linda and girls and wanted to ensure that a cancellation fee was not going to be levied on Amanda's account. I was so angry that I was going to voice my displeasure directly to the Staff Captain in good army fashion. (Luckily for all concerned I didn't, it would have been a long swim home). I am however going to write Azamara and voice my outrage over this matter.

Dining Room:
Repetitive menu.
Long waits for seating.
Rushed.
Meals presented to wrong people.
Servers inattentive regarding refilling of water or other beverages.
Cutlery not uniformly laid out from setting to setting. This may seem trivial, but for those not accustom to all the knives and forks etc, it was embarrassing for them when they are advised to start on the outside and work in.

Cafe:
Dirty cutlery and cups.
Dirty napkins.
Hot water coming from the cold water machines.
Ice machines that sometimes did not work.
Tables had tableware left from previous guests forcing others to sit at dirty tables.
Some tables not sanitized or set.
Appeared adequately staffed but they seemed to mill around a lot bypassing dirty tables.
During the quarantine for gastrointestinal illness, guests were still allowed to serve themselves at the steam tables.
Food generally luke warm. Understandably, it is difficult to keep food hot on a steam table, but just luke warm... come on.

Specialty Restaurants:
Rushed and harried, no time to linger.
Only a fair menu in Aqualina albeit good in Prime C.
Compulsory gratuities. Following meals, a strongly suggested "invitation" to leave $5.00 per person as a gratuity was left on the table. I will tip for good personal service, but I take offense to being told that I should leave a specific amount. I would much rather pay to eat and then tip accordingly!

Shore Tours:
Cyprus and Israel Ziporri Mosaics:
Guides provided a political commentary and inaccurate spin to most of their explanations during the tours. This occurred in spite of them all saying that this was forbidden. We acknowledge that the cruse line has not control over this; however, it did detract from the overall experience and historical perspective of the tours.

Overall Impression:
In a word, substandard. We are of the opinion that RCL and Celebrity provide a much superior product with a much more professional degree of service. I will not recommend to anyone that they cruise with Azamara. Period. The only saving grace was that the ports of call provided some respite from the ship while taking in some of the most fantastic places in the world

I have just returned from a cruise with Azamara (21st Nov) and I can honestly say that I think this reviewer was on a different ship. Staff, service, food and ambiance were outstanding. We loved it and will certainly be back. If you're wanting glitz it's not for you, the azamara journey is like a beautiful , floating, country house hotel ! The food was outstanding and Aqualina was incredible. take no notice of the naysayers... book Azamara, you won't be disappointed.

We just returned from Journey Oct 30th sailing and all I can say is WOW! It was our second Azamara cruise having been on the Quest earlier this year and our 15th Celebrity and It was our personal best cruise ever. The staff must of forgone their sleep to make us happy. We did not have one meal that wasn't excellent. Service was outstanding. There is always one person who complains... I watched an Italian woman throw a temper tantrum at guest realations that I have never seen a 3 year old do. She was also rude to other passengers. We met the most awsome people on this ship and had 3 hour dinners chatting the night away. I can't wait to go back. Do not hesitate to book this ship it will be the best money ever spent!!!

We returned from a 10 day western Med cruise on Journey last Sunday and can only say that Journey is absolutely wonderful - the food, the service, the staff, the ship - I don't think I know enough ways of saying how superb our cruise was. We can't wait to get back on board.

Thank you for the lengthy and thorough review. Judging by the other comments there is perhaps a difference in acceptable standards with some agreeing with you and others not. Your review however is so comprehensive that I feel more inclined to believe you than those who rebut you so comprehensivly.

If you like the ship styel and sieze then you should try the variosu sister ships (ant of teh ex "R" ships from Renaissance Cruises - either the Royal Princess or any of the Oceania Cruises ships, Insignia, Nautica and Regatta. Oceania Cruises in particular has received some very good reviews for delivering a quality yet relaxed luxury experience - something that I can personally vouch for having cruised with them on numerous occasions.

Looks as if nothing has changed on Azamara Journey since our cruise to Brazil last year. The same faults and lack of passenger care we experienced are still appearing. The consensus on our cruise was that it was at best 3 star level. To call the product deluxe is a travesty!

For what it's worth, we were on this same cruise and this is nothing more than a "hatchet Job", IMHO. We saw NONE of the items negatively mentioned, certainly no dirt or the like. We enjoyed the food, and found the service on the ship to be outstanding. As for the port comments, Chios is quiet on a Sunday, but the ship has to be somewhere on a Sunday, and cannot always be at sea. We actually had a very pleasant morning walking the streets of the Old Town and found it very interesting and relaxing after the long flight the previous day. I would have never selected Masada as a shore excursion as it is a long time on a bus and probably is better visited on a land-based tour. Sometimes, a little prior research on the Internet is a good investment. Reading this review makes me wonder what it does take to make some people happy as our experience was so dramatically different.

And for all this they charge you EIGHTEEN PER CENT yes not the normal 15% but EIGHTEEN PER CENT. Your experiences mirror a lot of ours for our May trip to the Adriatic. The service is dreadful. , methinks mainly because of the 18%. I still love these ex Renaissaince ships for their size and usually house party atmosphere. Try any of the 3 Princess trio (Pacific, Tahitian or Royal), or for a more informal Oceania. I'm told they are excellent too.
