I booked this cruise at the last minute and the description of it sounded very grand with "butler service" being included, this turned out to be nothing different from my limited experience of a standard cabin attendent.
I was interested to try a smaller ship (this one 700 passengers) and found it to be very good but the downside was that facilities were limited and the entertainment very basic. Being a smaller ship it visited some of the less popular islands but overall I was happy with most of ports of call. This was my first visit to the Caribbean.
The ship was finished to a very high standard (I believe refurbished Oct 07) but the quality of service did not match up to it. I've mixed views on the flexible dining policy; on the plus side got to meet different people each night at dinner but on the downside you didn't get the benefit of the waiting staff getting to know you as in fixed seating.
I found the drinks very expensive but that seems to be a common factor to all cruise ships. Also the service charge on drinks at 18.5% even further exagerated the prices. Do the waiting staff really receive it; I'd love to examine the ships accounts! Same holds for the daily charge. I'd prefer to operate tips properly, i.e a reward for good service rather than an automatic payment, however, I would want to see hands out all the time.
Overall, I doubt if I'll ever go back to Azamara.
